6800 kilo og oemme laar/6800 kilo and sore thighs
Most of the time you pick on your knees to last fysically all week.
Arbejdet maa siges at vaere enkelt.
The grapes are collected at the end of the rows by David and Alexandre.
Cut… cut… cutcut… cut… cutcutcut followed by a „panier“ or „David“;
What you mainly hear on this first day of the grapeharvest is rather simple. Even the day it is grey, it starts with pleasant 11 degrees Celsius and a nice smell of wet soil that reminds of autumn. We even stop just as the first raindrops arrive. The work is easy. With a pair of scissors like those you may use in your garden, we cut the grapes where they are attached to the branch. The grapes are put in the panier and when it is full, we achieve the right to call out for David, one of two carriers.
With Alexandre he empties the full baskets in plasticboxes that contains 50 kilos. Seks of those are just a bit more than thhe chenillard can handle. This little machine on caterpillars har measures so it can just go through the rows of wine and can be loaded with six full boxes if you are lucky. Some of the time the boys have luck, otherwise the little beast coughs, stops or shows other annoying habits.
To work well in the rows is teamwork. With a good spirit and the right logistics you are pretty well off. But the baskets must be emptied preferably before they are too full, and the boxes taken to the van to avoid bottlenecks. Sometimes not easy to achieve due to the acrobatics of the caterpillar.
Beginners problems or not. The work progress well. Gerard, who runs the farm, picks up the full boxes and deliver them at the cooperative that makes the grapes to juice. This is where he hears todays gossip. For instance that one of the members of the cooperative has had his grapes , because they have too much disease. Something, this guy through the years has preached for everybody else. Now seems to be pay back time following the law of action and re-action. Nobody seems to think that he eventually will be denied to deliver thus lacking a substantial part of his yearly income.
As the first raindrops fall, we have pickede more than enough to fulfil the quota of the day, and can go home with our sore backs and legs. Result of the day: 6800 kilos and suspectedly indeed very sour thighs when the sun sets again.
